How to measure on a PDF drawing
Architects, engineers, contractors and estimators get drawings as PDFs every day. Very often you need just one number: the length of a wall, the run of a fence or the floor area of a room. You should not have to install CAD software or a paid PDF editor for that. This free PDF measuring tool runs in your browser and gives you real-world dimensions straight from the drawing.
- Open your PDF. Drop it onto the viewer or click Open PDF. Multi-page sets are supported. Use the arrows to move between sheets.
- Set the scale. Choose the scale shown in the title block, for example 1:100 or 1/4" = 1'-0". If you are not sure the PDF is at its original paper size, use Calibrate (see below).
- Pick a tool and click. Length measures between two points. Polyline adds up several segments. Area measures a closed outline and its perimeter. Finish a polyline or area with a double-click, Enter or the Finish button.
- Read or export the results. Every measurement is labelled on the sheet and listed on the right with totals. Export CSV sends them to Excel or Google Sheets.
How the scale is calculated
A PDF exported from AutoCAD, Revit, ArchiCAD or another CAD program stores the sheet at its true paper size. One PDF point is 1/72 of an inch, or 0.3528 mm on paper. The tool converts the distance you click into paper millimetres and multiplies it by the scale:
At 1:100, a line 50 mm long on paper is 50 × 100 = 5,000 mm, or 5.00 m. Imperial scales work the same way: 1/4" = 1'-0" is a ratio of 1:48, so one inch on paper is 48 inches (4 feet) in reality.
Calibrate from a known dimension
Sometimes a drawing was printed with “fit to page”, scanned, or exported at a different paper size. Then the nominal scale no longer matches. Calibration solves this. Choose Calibrate, click both ends of a dimension whose real length you know, such as a dimensioned wall or a scale bar, and type that length. The tool works out the exact scale for that page, and all measurements on the page update instantly. Each page keeps its own calibration, so sheets at different scales can sit in the same file.
Measuring areas and perimeters
For room areas, plot areas or façade surfaces, select Area and click around the outline, corner by corner. Hold Shift to lock each segment to horizontal or vertical for clean right angles. The area is calculated with the standard polygon (shoelace) formula and shown in m² or ft², together with the perimeter. Outlines with any number of corners work, including L-shaped and irregular rooms.
Accuracy tips
- Zoom in before clicking corners. The tool measures exactly where you click, so a closer view gives a more precise result.
- Check one known dimension first. If it matches, the scale is right for the whole sheet.
- Remember that a PDF is only as accurate as the drawing behind it. Where tolerances matter, written dimensions always take priority over scaled ones.
Frequently asked questions
Is this PDF measuring tool free?
Yes. It is completely free, with no account, no watermark and no limit on files or measurements.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. The PDF is opened and rendered inside your browser. It never leaves your device, which makes the tool safe for confidential drawings.
How do I measure a distance on a PDF?
Open the PDF, choose the drawing scale (for example 1:100) or calibrate from a known dimension, pick the Length tool and click the two end points. The real-world distance appears on the drawing and in the measurement list.
Which scale should I choose?
Choose the scale printed in the title block if the PDF was exported at true paper size, such as directly from AutoCAD, Revit or ArchiCAD. If you are not sure, use Calibrate: click both ends of a dimension you know and type its real length.
Can I measure areas on a PDF?
Yes. Pick the Area tool, click around the outline of the room or zone, and finish with double-click, Enter or the Finish button. You get the area in m² or ft² together with the perimeter.
Does it work with feet and inches?
Yes. Switch units to ft-in and choose an imperial scale such as 1/4" = 1'-0". Lengths are shown in feet and inches to the nearest 1/16 inch and areas in square feet.
Why is my measurement wrong?
Most often the PDF was printed to fit a different paper size, so the nominal scale no longer matches. Use Calibrate on a known dimension, which fixes the scale for that page regardless of how the PDF was produced.
